See How They Ring!

A new history of handbell ringing in Australasia

The Payne Family

The Paynes were a musical family who presented their first professional performances in the Ballarat Mechanics’ Institute in 1886. The three girls were among Australia’s earliest professional female violinists. The Paynes took an amazing number of bell-related musical instruments with them on tour, including handbells, tap bells, song bells, organ chimes, cathedral chimes and fairy bells. After forty years of public life the family retired in South Africa.
